Overview
About the event
The inaugural WR Chess Masters Cup gathered 16 of the world's brightest stars at the five-star Langham Hotel in London for a knockout in a format never seen before: two classical games per day, with Armageddon to break ties. The field included former world champions Viswanathan Anand and Veselin Topalov and former women's world champion Alexandra Kosteniuk. 70 million people followed the event worldwide.
Arjun Erigaisi marched through undefeated — past Bodhana Sivanandan, then fellow Indians Vidit and Praggnanandhaa — to reach the final against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. After two drawn classical games, Erigaisi held his nerve in the decisive Armageddon to claim the title and 27.84 FIDE Circuit points, briefly leading the FIDE Circuit race.
